Airtel supersedes rivals in performance metrics: Study

New Delhi: In terms of network quality, telecom operator Bharti Airtel has emerged as a winner in four out of six performance metrics, according to a new study by Opensignal.

Airtel has demonstrated best video experience, voice app experience, download speeds and latency experience between December 1 and February 28, according to data collected by the UK-based network analytics firm.

Airtel users continued to enjoy best video experience on its network, while Vodafone’s performance was rated as ‘Good’.

“Our users on Airtel network now perceive an Acceptable Voice App Experience (74-80) while using OTT voice services on apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Skype, etc,” the report said.

However, Vodafone, Idea and Jio landed in the ‘Poor’ bracket in the voice category, whereas BSNL fell to ‘Very Poor’.

While Airtel held the top spot in download speed category with average speed of 10.1 MBPS, Vodafone and Idea are steadily closing the gap. Vodafone and Idea’s download speeds are hardly 1 MBPS behind the top spot, the report said.

Vodafone continued to dominate Upload Speed Experience nationally with a score of 3.9 Mbps. Vodafone and Idea clocked speeds that were more than 23% faster than Airtel, 42% faster than Jio, and more than four times faster than BSNL, Opensignal said.

“Over the last six months Airtel’s users’ response time reduced by 3.1ms, while Jio’s score increased slightly by 2.1ms, allowing Airtel to win latency experience award for the first time,” the report said.

Jio’s 4G availability score has reached 98.2% while 4G coverage experience is rated 9.2 out of 10 by Opensignal.

The firm had surveyed 8 million devices and took 21 billion measurements for the purpose of this study.
