jair bolsonaro: Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro quotes Ramayana to request for key drug for treating Covid patients

New Delhi: Brazil, Latin America’s biggest country, has referred to Ramayana while making a request for export of key drug to fight Covid-19.

Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro, in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, wrote, “Just as Lord Hanuman brought the holy medicine from the Himalayas to save the life of Lord Rama’s brother Lakshmana, and Jesus healed those who were sick and restored the sight to Bartimeu, India and Brazil will overcome this global crisis by joining forces and sharing blessings for the sake of all peoples.”

Bolsonaro was the chief guest for India’s 70th Republic Day celebrations this January and the two sides have opened several areas of cooperation.

Brazilian President and Indian PM spoke over the telephone and discussed the global situation in the wake of the spread of COVID-19 pandemic

“Requested support in the continuity of the provision of pharmaceuticals for the production of hydroxychloroquine,” the Brazilian President said in a tweet.

According to an Indian government statement, “The Prime Minister assured all possible support to Brazil President in this difficult hour. They agreed that their officials would remain in regular touch with respect to the COVID-19 situation and its emerging challenges.”

Over 30 countries have been urging India to release anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine in the fight against coronavirus or COVID-19.

The government on Tuesday said it will allow limited exports of the key drug to “nations that have been badly affected” by the pandemic and in the neighbourhood.
